One adventurous evening, Tistel ventured farther than she had gone before, reaching the edge of a misty swamp that somehow seemed luminous. Amongst the slight misty fog, in the lily pads and algae-covered logs, Tistel discovered a unique creature—a moss covered swamp fae with colorful luminescent dragon fly wings. They had a very unique look with mushrooms sprouting from the top of their long brown mossy hair that seemed to cast a soft glow like miniature lanterns and dark sleepy eyes that seemed quite inquisitive.
Tistel approached the intriguing fae with a warm smile and spoke first “ Hello, I’m Tistel! Who might you be?” The mossy fae tilts their head but smiles in return. “My name is Estie, it’s a pleasure. I see a friend in you.” After proper introductions, the two mystical beings sat on a log near the swampy pond and got swept into conversation.
The two told all kinds of stories of their respective lands. Tistel shared tales of her forest adventures, describing the treasures of her home that over time she collected. Estie, with their sleepy demeanor, shared knowledge of the swamp's hidden wonders and introduced Tistel to some of their little critter friends. A kinship sparked between them all.
Estie invited Tistel to their swampy abode as frogs hopped playfully around them, welcoming their new visitor with gentle melodic croaking. The environment was alive with magic, the air thick with the scent of damp earth, blooming wildflowers and moss. The soft glow from the mushrooms on Estie’s head cast an enchanting light, guiding their way through the maze of lily pads and algae-covered logs. As they approached a particularly grand hollowed but very much alive willow tree, Tistel marveled at the beauty of Estie’s home. The tree’s massive trunk which was covered in soft moss and delicate fungi created a natural, cushioned entrance that led into a spacious interior. Inside the hollow was cozy and inviting, with the walls lined with shelves made from twisted roots and filled with various natural curiosities. The floor was a plush carpet of moss, soft underfoot and emitting a faint, comforting glow.
Upon entry, Estie scampers over to a spot by the tree’s roots where a tiny crystal clear cascade is held between the bark of the tree. The water fell into a lovely little natural well at the bottom where Estie went and started meticulously rubbing off the caked mud from their bare feet. Tistel stares in confusion as to why someone would purposefully clean off wonderful earth from their skin. “What are you doing that for?” Tistel asks, profoundly. Estie looks up at their new friend and scrunches their nose. “ I really dislike the feeling of the dry mud on my skin. Come! Let’s relax inside now!” They gesture to the entrance as Tistel shrugs and lets out a small giggle.
“Welcome to my home, Tistel,” Estie said, their voice as serene as the surrounding swamp. “It’s not often that I have visitors here, but I’m glad you’ve come.”
Tistel smiled, feeling at ease in Estie’s presence. “Thank you for inviting me. Your home is truly magical. I’ve never seen anything like it.” Estie nodded, their eyes twinkling. “The swamp is a place of quiet beauty and hidden wonders. It may seem unassuming at first, but it holds many secrets for those who take the time to explore.” The swamp held many magical places and landmarks. Estie spoke of the Moonlit Grove, a secluded area where the trees’ leaves glowed with a silvery light under the moon. It was a place of reflection and meditation, where one could connect deeply with the natural magic of the swamp. They also mentioned the Singing Stones, a circle of ancient stones that emitted hauntingly beautiful melodies when touched, each stone producing a different note that harmonized with the others.
As the evening turned to night, the swamp transformed into a realm of twinkling lights and gentle sounds. Fireflies danced in the twilight, their glow adding to the magical ambiance. The frogs’ croaking and the crickets’ chirping created a serene symphony, lulling Tistel into a state of peaceful contentment.
“You know,” Estie said, their voice soft and reflective, “there’s a certain magic in the quiet moments, in the stillness of the swamp. It’s a different kind of adventure, one that’s more about discovery and connection than excitement and danger.”
Tistel nodded, understanding the wisdom in Estie’s words. “I think I could learn a lot from you, Estie. Your perspective is refreshing and grounding. I feel like I’ve found a kindred spirit here.”
Estie smiled, their eyes filled with warmth. “And I, too, feel a connection with you, Tistel. Perhaps our paths were meant to cross, and our journeys meant to intertwine.”
As they sat together, sharing stories and enjoying the tranquil beauty of the swamp, Tistel felt a deep sense of gratitude for this unexpected encounter. She knew that Estie’s wisdom and serene presence would be a valuable addition to her adventures.
Estie excitedly looks at Tistel and clamps their fists together with a toothy grin “Oh! Did you know that each realm has creatures that embody the essence of their environment and are attuned to the realms?” Tistel, startled by the sudden jolt of enthusiasm, shakes her head “What? No, I had no idea. Tell me more!”
Estie flops out of their mossy seat and runs over to the branchy book shelf to pull out a massive, very beautiful and colorful book. Tistel observes the book in Estie’s hands in awe. The binding of the book seems woven and handmade from richly textured leather and looks extremely sturdy. The cover is embossed with intricate, colorful designs that shimmer faintly in the light and what looks to be her home land with the bright orange hues. Tistel notices her land is not the only one on the cover. Many lands which she does not recognize except for Estie’s and her own are artistically painted in a kind of ellipse shape. “What is this?” Tistel asks, most curious and intrigued. “Honestly, I’m not entirely sure.” Estie turns the hefty book in their hands to look at it inquisitively. “I’ve had this book for as long as I can remember but it’s one of my favorites. I’ve never left my home but I have always wanted to explore the lands in this book. Some pages are ripped out, though. Here are stories of creatures that roam the lands to protect them. A lot of them stay hidden. They come in all shapes and sizes and colors!”
Estie hobbles over with the book in both hands and sits down next to Tistel. They both flip through the book together. Estie tells Tistel of the things they’ve read and shows them pictures in the book and tells tales about their dreams to explore and travel. Tistel grabs both of Estie’s hands and looks them in the eyes “Come with me, friend! We can see the realms together and find new friends along the way!” Estie decided that they would accompany Tistel on her journeys and they both decided where they would travel to next.
